Abstract

This study sought to uncover the reality of a socio-security phenomenon that has spread in some Algerian cities, represented by graffiti about psychotropic drugs, for the purpose of trafficking and abuse, through explicit and coded symbolic meanings and connotations, and how it affects behaviors and social interactions in the local community. The methodology of collecting visual data and analyzing photography and drawings in a physical way of the expressive act and its symbolic significance was used, and the results showed the existence of the unity of the intellectual contents of the graffiti; as it focuses centrally on the main theme of the psychotropic drug Pregabalin “Lyrica”, and the centrality and centrality of the graffiti theme as it became a focus for advertising and promoting psychotropic substances. The effectiveness of the subject matter as it shows the impact of graffiti in attracting attention and motivating youth to experiment with psychotropic substances, as well as the multiplicity of linguistic discourse and unification of purpose as graffiti writers use several languages (Arabic, French, English) in addition to the language of symbol, form, color, and line. The study also found a change in values where graffiti reflects changes in values and beliefs, and highlights certain symbols related to rebellion and uprising, which reflects the multiple security dimensions of what may appear to be artistic symbols on the walls of the city, but in fact it is a method of promotion and perhaps advertising and propaganda. The study recommends strengthening and intensifying awareness and education efforts about the health and social risks of using drugs and psychotropic substances, as well as strengthening police efforts in analyzing graffiti that may be indicative of organized crime patterns. The study also recommends strengthening effective therapeutic and psychological interventions for individuals affected by substance abuse, and providing the necessary support to recover and engage in a healthy life.
