Negative implications of electronic games addiction: A field study on high school and university students in Riyadh

Abstract
The study aims to uncover the reality of playing electronic games by young people and the factors leading to this practice. The study seeks to monitor the most important negative effects of electronic games addiction. The study relies on the social survey method through the sample, and on the electronic questionnaire as a tool for data collection. The study sample consists of six hundred students from High school and university levels. The study is explained theoretically through the behavioral theory. The study has a number of results, the most important of which is that there is an addiction to playing electronic games among a large group of young people. One o the most important factors leading to this addiction is the excitement and suspense of the electronic games and the state of isolation in which many young people live. The study reveals that there are many negative effects of addicting these games, the most important of which are the social and family effects represented in the state of individuals isolating themselves from social life and their connection to the virtual world provided by electronic games, as well as their dereliction to perform religious duties, and having some health problems and poor academic achievement. In addition, such individuals may acquiring many behaviors that may lead to threatening the safety and security of society. The study provides some recommendations, the most important of which are: the need to monitor the games young people play
