The Impact of New Media on National Security From the Perspective of Faculty Members at King Khalid Military College

Abstract
The impact of social media on national security issues is increasing in various ways, both positively and negatively. On the negative side, it poses a clear threat to stability and peace, as the gap between its proper and improper use remains significant. Therefore, the research aims to understand the influence of new media on national security. To achieve this, the researcher employed a descriptive survey method, designing a questionnaire to identify the positive and negative effects of using modern media on national security. A random sample of 123 faculty members from the King Khalid Military Academy was obtained.
This research found that the most used new media platforms are WhatsApp, Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. It is also revealed that some negative effects of new media, including collecting personal information, disseminating fake news and propaganda, and communicating with unidentified groups with political or ideological agendas. However, it also highlighted some positive effects such as showcasing the high security level of the kingdom, demonstrating the state’s ability and flexibility in dealing with global events, highlighting the kingdom’s efforts in political issues, and emphasizing security efforts during the Hajj season, increasing awareness and promoting national belonging. Additionally, the research recommended the importance of official involvement in enhancing content supervision directed at society, raising awareness of national security importance, and guiding official media channels in modern media to employ content that achieves national security objectives.
