Abstract

The current study aims to identify the reality of the performance of workers in correctional institutions. The study used the descriptive and analytical methods, and an interview tool was used to collect data. The study population consisted of workers in correctional institutions in Riyadh, Makkah, Jeddah, and Dammam. The study sample was made up of 86 psychosocial specialists, including males and females, from each correctional institution under study.

Among the most important findings of the study was the study participants’ agreement on the method registering inmates; where an initial form is filled out that contains preliminary information to verify the inmate’s physical and psychological health and the extent of his need for certain medications. Likewise, the study participants agreed on the process of distributing inmates to social workers and psychologists that it is done equally without any other criteria. Likewise, the study participants agreed that there are obstacles that prevent them from carrying out their work as required; the most important of which is the small ratio of social and psychological workers to the number of inmates in the male reformatories.

Based on these results, the most important recommendations were to emphasize the use of official approved forms, ensure the classification of inmates according to practical standards aimed at the prevention of inmates learning about each other’s criminal behavior, increase the benefit from rehabilitation and reform programs, monitor rehabilitation programs, and initiate inmate aftercare programs.
